Dead Patches in Lawn - Fusarium Patch
Problem: Fusarium Patch
Symptoms: Circular Yellow-green patches from a few inches up to 1 foot in diameter. Patches usually appear after snow melt but can appear anytime during damp, cool weather. Patches will grow and become pinkish white with affected blades becoming matted and turning light tan. Affected patches will have a rusty-pink border and can join together causing large affected areas. The fungus that causes this is only active during temperatures of 32 to 60 degrees. Prolonged snow cover and cold rainy periods favor this disease.
Solution: Keep lawn short in the fall, winter and early spring. Reduce nitrogen level of fertilizer for fall feeding. Increase sunlight to shaded areas by thinning trees and low branches. Turf that is sparsely infected will usually recover on its own. For more serious problems a fungicide with fenarimol, mancozeb, or triadimefen can be applied according to label directions.
